Ever heard of the Spokane River Classic? Imagine Bloomsday, but on the water. That’s what organizers have planned for August 23rd when family, friends and athletes will paddle and play through the heart of Spokane’s urban watershed. And you’re invited!

The family oriented event is open to anyone with a canoe, kayak and/or paddleboard. Register online here.

Many people may not even know paddling opportunities exist downtown. But thanks to development of the Spokane River Water Trail, river access is available and growing. “The River Classic,” said Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club event organizer Stan Mrzygod, “is an opportunity to expose people to the water trail and have fun.”

“We’re able to do this because McKinstry created river access a couple years ago as part of developing McKinstry Station, their 38,000 square foot Innovation Center,” said the Forum’s Executive Director Andy Dunau, “Located right across from Gonzaga, it’s beautiful.” Click here for map.

The race will kick off at the Don Kardong Bridge. To accommodate all paddlers, participants can choose between the 1.3-mile “Citizen’s Course,” or the 5.4-mile “Endurance Course.”

But it’s not just about the paddling. The lawn area around McKinstry is being transformed into a Spokane River party. Fueling the festivities for adults will be a beer garden courtesy of River City Brewery, barbeque from Big Daddy’s, Camargo’s taco truck, and prizes for participants. Kids will be fueled with a root beer stand, popcorn and an interactive play area that includes making authentic fish prints.

“This is a really exciting time for downtown,” said Dunau. “As part of the Convention Center Expansion, Spokane Parks and Recreation will be installing additional access below Division Street Bridge this fall. Within a year or two, the color of kayaks and stand up paddle boards will be a common and pleasing downtown aesthetic.”
