Avista issues river alert

July 13, 2011

Water flows on the Spokane River continue to run high. After the fourth of July, Avista reported water passing through the Post Falls Dam being five times higher than normal.

These flows cause both safety and practical concerns. In Idaho, Q’emlin boat launch just upstream of Post Falls dam is still not open for the season. As flows decrease and Avista can close the gates at Post Falls Dam to maintain summer lake elevations, the boat launch will be opened. Avista’s current forecast is that the boat launch will be open by about July 20th.

Downstream of Post Falls Dam, flows have given outfitters as well as whitewater paddling and rafting experts an extended season well worth remembering. For novice, inexperienced users wanting to enjoy these unique summer flows, the Forum recommends going out on the river with expert guides. This weekend, the Forum has Meet Me at the River trips on Friday and Saturday that are led by professional guides from Spokane River Parks and Recreation.

As of July 12th, flows at the Spokane gage (just downstream of downtown) were 8300 cfs. This is more than double what flows were last year. In addition to managing craft in more difficult flows, water temperatures remain colder than normal. For those struggling in the water, the combination can pose particularly serious safety concerns.
