Led by Heather Hodson, this 60 women strong angling group proves the adage that passion isn’t learned, it just is. Heather picked up a fly rod in 2008 and has been “hooked” ever since.

Said Heather, “It took me about a year to catch my first fish on the fly. Eventually I took the 101 course at Silver Bow and never looked back.” In April, she did a solo journey that took her to nine states and 21 different fishing holes. “The fish gods have been very good to me.”

Spokane is home, however. And Heather wants people to come out and show their support of the Spokane River. “It’s an amazing urban fishery with native red bands. It can also be a challenge to fish. By improving access and habitat conditions, we can all be a part of assuring a lasting legacy. Conservation and restoration should start with taking care of what’s in our backyard.”

“We’re contributing a basket of clothing swag and some private instruction,” said Heather.

Her passion is not limited to casting solo and finding that “Zen moment of being out there on the river.” She founded Spokane Women on the Fly in 2014 with the notion to “develop something where it can be a safe and fun outlet for women to meet new friends and get out on the water. Fly fishing, especially for women, can seem intimidating when it shouldn’t be.”

Heather describes the group as women with a range of experience who “come in all shapes, sizes and backgrounds.” They do a fly fishing outing once a month, and “hackle and hops” once a month to tie flies and learn more. “The first time someone catches a fish on the fly is always special,” said Heather. “And I really enjoy getting people out on the water.”

This year Heather received her guide license so she can also offer private instruction to meet people’s specific needs. And yeah, she’s now one of the Silver Bow 101 instructors.

So ladies, bring your honey and come fly with us at Water to Wine.
