Flora Road cleanup expected to begin this fall
August 5, 2009
The Washington Department of Ecology plans to place a cap of clean gravel over contaminated sediments at the Flora Road site, which is located in Spokane Valley about five miles west of the Idaho border. Current expectations are for construction activities to be completed by the end of September.
Contamination, which includes lead, arsenic, zinc and cadmium, are believed to be the result of heavy metals that washed downstream from the Idaho Coeur d’Alene basin.
Until September 5th, Ecology is taking comments on construction specifications, permit requirements and a determination of non-significance under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA). Ecology says that it “will respond to questions and comments submitted by the public, and may modify the proposed work, if appropriate.”
