Year to Date River Cleanup Tally: 23,600 lbs of Trash

For the second year, the Spokane River Forum and Spokane Riverkeeper has teamed up to conduct river cleanup from spring through fall. 65 cleanups with 1,936 volunteers have netted over 23,600 lbs of trash this year.

“Schools, individuals, businesses, non-profits … you name it, they’re signing up,” said Spokane River Forum Executive Director Andy Dunau. “Some cleanups are led, others we provide the supplies for. This year, we hired an AmeriCorps intern to help with outreach and leading groups.”

The Forum and Riverkeeper are on track to meet or exceed the 25,000 pounds of trash removed last year. “Breaking last year’s mark gives us mixed feelings,” said Dunau. “We’re pleased the program support is strong and growing. But the numbers also mean the sources of litter are not slowing down.”

Imagine what the river would be like without people stepping up and out for cleanup? Thank you to the hundreds of people and our partners teaming up for a clean Spokane River.
