Redband Park water trail access and South Gorge trail to begin construction
Glover Field has been renamed Redband Park, and now includes the riparian area between Water Avenue and the river. This summer construction will begin on a trailhead that will feature a non-motorized boat launch, vehicle turnaround, expanded parking, and restroom facility where the ballfield and former community center are located. The field itself was restored last year by the Spokane Indians ballclub and KXLY-TV’s Extreme Team.
At the end of May, a major milestone was passed when the city provided the “permit package” necessary for the Department of Commerce to initiate $235,000 of funding to the Spokane River Forum to support construction. On a parallel path, the city received over one million dollars of Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) grants to support this effort and connect Redbank Park with People’s Park via a one-mile paved trail through Peaceful Valley. Eventually, a 3.5-mile trail loop will allow people to cross the river and loop back to downtown via the Centennial Trail that goes through Kendall Yards.
Thank you again to the Spokane Conservation District for funding completion of the design in 2017, local legislators for sponsoring this project in the state capital budget, and Spokane Indians Baseball for igniting the redband rally. Together with the Spokane Tribe of Indians, Peaceful Valley Neighborhood Association, federal and state agencies, several user groups and city staff, the 101 pieces of the puzzle are coming together
