Barker Road Water Trail Restoration Continues
“Gotta keep after it” explained Charlie Peterson, who has worked tirelessly for the Spokane Conservation District for the past sixteen years. “It’s easy enough to start a restoration project like this, but the real test is if people are coming back year after year to continue planting and managing the effort.” Read more and see slide show.
For over a year, the Forum has been working with volunteers and the SCD to pass Charlie’s test at Barker Road. In November, over a dozen people representing the Spokane Flyfishers, students in the Spokane Community College water quality program, Northwest Whitewater Association, and friends of the Forum continued the effort. More pine trees and willow whips were planted; and some Oregon grape added to discourage people from going beneath the Bridge.
Said Andy Dunau, the Forum’s Executive Director, “This is the third planting we’ve done this year. In addition, we installed the interpretive sign and cleaned-up the area as part of Upriver Scrub. Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors, it’s coming together. “
