Examining Lake Spokane for excess nutrients, results will help determine if source is on-site septic systems
Ecology announced that “Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey will collect groundwater and aquatic plant samples near the Suncrest community in Stevens County for a study on excess nutrients in Lake Spokane.” Ecology is helping fund the study to determine if on-site septic systems are a source of excess nutrients that enter the lake. The concern at hand is that excess nutrients deplete oxygen that fish and other aquatic life need to survive. In addition, it can cause toxic algae blooms that are harmful to human health.
