Lice Shampoo with Lindane
Household Hazardous Waste – Special Handling Required
Do not place unused lice shampoo, containing the chemical lindane, in curbside trash or recycle bins. Household amounts can be dropped off, free of charge, at a Transfer Station's Household Hazardous Waste site. Materials should be in leak-proof containers with the contents labeled on the outside. No containers greater than 5 gallons.
Lice Shampoo may contain lindane. Lindane is persistent in the environment and may cause cancer. Lice (bugs) can make you itch for some time even after all of the bugs are dead. Do not use more Lindane Shampoo than your doctor tells you. Do not keep Lindane Shampoo on your hair for more than 4 minutes. Do not put Lindane Shampoo in your mouth because it is a poison if taken by mouth.
Safer Alternatives: Try a lice comb and less-toxic pyrethrin shampoo.
