General Information

The primary uses of turpentine are: as a solvent for thinning oil-based paints, for producing varnishes, and as a raw material for the chemical industry.

Turpentine is considered a highly toxic solvent, it can be absorbed directly into unbroken skin. Handle with gloves and make sure that you have proper ventilation when using. Be sure when storing turpentine it is properly labeled.

NEVER toss solvent-soaked rags or paper towels in the garbage. They can ignite. Instead, store them in self-closing oily waste cans, such as those used for industrial purposes, in order to prevent potential fires.

NEVER pour solvents down the drain. This is not only illegal in most areas of the country, but also very unsafe and hazardous to the environment. You don’t want solvents contaminating the ground water. Keep used solvents in a closed container and dispose of at a Hazardous Household Waste center.
