Thermometer, Mercury Containing
Household Hazardous Waste – Special Handling Required
Do not place in the curbside trash or recycle bins. Thermometers containing mercury can be dropped off, free of charge, at a Transfer Station's Household Hazardous Waste Site.
If you break a thermometer containing mercury while using it or if you improperly dispose of it, the thermometer will release mercury vapors that are harmful to human and ecological health.
If you break a thermometer containing mercury, the EPA has the proper way to clean it up.
Safer Alternatives:
Electronic/programmable or digital thermometers are safer alternatives.
If choosing a battery powered digital thermometer, choose one that contains a replaceable battery; some are not replaceable. The battery is a button cell battery and may contain a small amount of mercury, so it should be dropped off at a Transfer Station's Household Hazardous Waste site.
