Walmart provides prescription drug disposal product to pharmacy customers a no cost. New and existing pharmacy patients can request a free packet at any time. More information can be found on Walmart's brochure here.
The material comes in a small packet containing ingredients that, when emptied into a pill bottle with warm water, turns any form of prescription drug — including powders, pills, tablets, capsules, liquids or patches — into a biodegradable gel that can't be separated or converted back into a usable drug. The treated drugs can then be responsibly disposed of in regular trash.
Patients filling any new Class II opioid prescription at Walmart pharmacies will receive a free packet and opioid safety information brochure when picking up their prescription. Patients with chronic Class II opioid prescriptions will be offered a free packet every six months.
