General Information

Do not place tires in the curbside recycle or trash bins. In the City of Spokane 4 tires may be placed beside the curbside trash bin on your collection day.

Residential amounts (4-5 old tires) may be taken to the Transfer Stations. Fees apply. Remove tires from rims if possible, but stations will take tires on rims if necessary. If the outside tire diameter is over 36 inches, the tires must be cut into 2 foot lengths. No dedicated loads of tires are accepted. The load must be tires mixed with garbage. Improper tire disposal poses serious threats to the environment. The Department of Ecology states, "Piles of waste tires harbor mosquitoes, snakes and other vermin. West Nile Virus, transmitted by mosquitoes threatens health. Many tire piles have existed for a significant length of time and present a fire hazard."

The easiest way to handle old tires is to let your tire store dispose of the old tires when you buy new tires. Your old tires are sent to a commercial tire retreading or recycling plant. Ask your tire store for details and fees. Disposing of tires with a licensed vendor allows them to be recycled and reused. Retreaded tires contain up to 75% recycled content. Manufacturing one new truck tire takes 22 gallons of oil. In contrast, it takes only 7 gallons of oil to make one retread tire.
