Paint thinner and solvents are commonly used to clean paint guns because of their ability to dissolve paint residue, especially in the small openings of paint guns. The current shop practice is to use solvents in an enclosed automatic gun washer, manually clean the guns, or to use a combination of both manual and automatic cleaning. Thinners and solvents must be managed as hazardous waste.
See the Paint Waste section of the Ecology's "Shop Guide for Dangerous Waste Management" for information on how to handle thinners and solvents.
There are two main types of alternative cleaning solutions currently available, one is water based, and the other is citrus based, containing d-limonene. These alternative cleaning systems can help businesses save money, improve worker safety and receive recognition for as "green" shop and good neighbor. For more information consult the Department of Toxic Substances Control's "Paint Spray Gun Cleaning" document.
