Business waste, including tires, CANNOT be accepted at the household hazardous waste facilities. Disposal options depend on the amount of waste the business generates. Depending on where your business is located, options vary. Call ahead for rates, fees, and guidelines:
- Businesses in the City of Spokane can contact the Spokane Solid Waste Collection Dept.;
- Businesses in cities outside of the City of Spokane and in unincorporated areas of Spokane County can contact private solid waste haulers such as Waste Management Northwest or Sunshine Disposal.
- Dispose of your tires at the tire store when you purchase new tires. Call first to confirm that they'll take your old tires with purchase, what they do with the old tires and how often they send the old tires out for retreading or recycling. Avoid tires stores with excessively large piles of old tires. Fees apply.
Improper tire disposal poses serious threats to the environment. As the Department of Ecology states, "Piles of waste tires harbor mosquitoes, snakes and other vermin. West Nile Virus, transmitted by mosquitoes threatens health. Many tire piles have existed for a significant length of time and present a fire hazard."
Disposing your tires when you purchase tires from with a licensed tire vendor allows them to be recycled and reused. Retreaded tires contain up to 75% recycled content. Manufacturing one new truck tire takes 22 gallons of oil. In contrast, it takes only 7 gallons of oil to make one retread tire.
