General Information

In about 90 percent of cases, car batteries can be recycled, but, you need to get them to the correct location for recycling. Standard car batteries commonly contain heavy metals, such as lead, acid and plastic, no matter the size (6-volt or 12-volt), and whether they are used in automobiles, motorcycles or trucks, if not disposed of properly, these components contaminate the environment, including the air, water and soil.

Resources

Another option for rechargeable batteries is to return them to the place of purchase if the retail store participates in a battery return program. Many retailers participate in a take-back recycling program operated by the non-profit Call2Recycle organization. To find a local participating store, go to the Call2Recycle Web site. Residents of Washington State can call 1-800-RECYCLE or check the Website for locations where you may take mercury-containing batteries.
