General Information

nickel-cadmium battery (NiCd or NiCad) is a rechargeable battery used for portable computers, drills, camcorders, cordless and wireless telephones, emergency lighting and other small battery-operated devices requiring an even power discharge. NiCds use electrodes made of nickel oxide hydroxide, metallic cadmium and an alkaline electrolyte of potassium hydroxide.

Cadmium can be absorbed through the skin by touching a spilled battery. Since most Nickle-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries are sealed, there are no health risks in handling intact cells; caution is required when working with an open battery.
