You Need to Know

Do not place unused drain cleaner in the curbside trash or recycle bins. Drop it off, free of charge, at a Transfer Station's Household Hazardous Waste site.  Containers must be closed, labeled and no more than 5 gallons.

Drain cleaner may contain lye, chlorine bleach, Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), or sulfuric acid. It may burn your skin and eyes.

Safer Alternatives:  To prevent clogging, use a drain strainer.

To unclog a drain:

  1. First, use a plunger.
  2. Pour ½ cup baking soda into drain, followed by ½ cup vinegar.
  3. Cover drain tightly.
  4. Wait 5 minutes.
  5. Pour teakettle of boiling water down drain.
  6. Repeat, if needed.
  7. If still clogged, use a drain snake.
