Household Hazardous Waste – Special Handling Required

Do not place unused paint thinner, solvent strippers or sludge in the curbside trash or recycle bins.  Solvent based products can be dropped off at a Transfer Station's Household Hazardous Waste site. NOTE: Thinner may be mixed with unusable oil-base paints which are being disposed of at a Household Hazardous Waste Drop Site.

General Information

Unused portions which cannot be given away should be taken to one of the Household Hazardous Waste sites. 

Brush Cleaner sludge containing TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate) is considered hazardous waste.

Paint Strippers - Read the label. Wear a vapor respirator and gloves. Use all of the product or give the leftovers to someone who will use it. Let empty container air out and dispose of in curbside trash. 

Reuse:  Thinner, Turpentine and Mineral Spirits can be reclaimed and reused by allowing paint particles to settle; strain out the paint particles and store the reclaimed product in a closed labeled container.
