Description

Kootenai County provides free hazardous waste collection for residents of Kootenai County. The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility located at the Prairie Transfer Station has collection days of Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Do not leave your materials outside the gates. No hazardous waste can be collected at any other time besides designated collection dates and times.

NO COMMERCIAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ARE ACCEPTED.

When the HHW facility is open, bring in your products in their original containers if possible. Do not mix separate products together. There is a 10-gallon limit per household per collection day. Please securely pack the containers in your vehicle so they do not spill during transport. A HHW attendant will assist in unloading hazardous containers from your vehicle.

Prairie Transfer Station HHW facility also operates a free exchange program for residents of Kootenai County over the age of 18. Attendants sort through the material collected and offer up usable material on a specified cart near the receiving section. Each person may take up to 5 free products per day after a waiver has been signed. The exchange program operates the same hours as HHW collection.

All Kootenai County Solid Waste facilities are closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
